February 13, 2023 -- Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13 – the day before Valentine’s Day. The purpose of Galentine’s Day is to celebrate and honor the connection and friendship women have with their female friends. In honor of Galentine’s Day, we interviewed a few women in our community about the importance of female friendship and the friends they have made here.
Joan Sterrett and Deanna Campbell, two of our independent living residents, have been gal pals for four years now. They became fast friends upon moving into The Mansion at Rosemont (TMR), having recognized each other from an exercise class they each took in Villanova. Joan recalls before moving into TMR, that when she and her husband Paris would travel to South Carolina they would frequently read articles that Deanna’s late husband Dr. Twining Campbell would write for the local newspaper in that area. What a small world! Fast forward, they all met and connected at TMR and become close friends.
Unfortunately, Twining passed away in 2021, but the three of them have remained close. Especially gal pals Deanna and Joan. They admit they have completely different personalities, but they work extremely well together and have a close bond. Joan is the planner and Deanna is a more go-with-the-flow type of gal. “Deanna can fix and clean anything, and I am the organizer,” said Joan. That’s why they work so well at the White Elephant Shop on TMR’s campus, where they co-run the store.
“Joan is so good to me,” said Deanna. “She looks after me and I am so appreciative of that.”
They also love helping other residents. They both serve on the Good Neighbors committee and are both very in tune to others and help whenever needed. The two women socialize together, take fitness classes together (chair yoga, brain fitness), and spend a lot of time in the shop together.
We are grateful to have residents – and friends! -- like Joan and Deanna at our community.
