Meet Jerry and Tania: Preserving Their Perpetual Passion for the Arts

When Jerry and Tania first embarked on their search for a Life Plan Community (sometimes known as a continuing care retirement community or CCRC), they explored a wide variety of options. From the moment they stepped foot on the grounds of Springhouse, a HumanGood community in Boston, MA, something about the environment instantly set it apart. From the warm, genuinely welcoming team members to the tangible promise of a close-knit neighborhood and picturesque setting, they knew almost immediately that they had discovered their ideal home.

“We liked the library, which was essential as we’re both avid readers,” Tania shares. “Plus, the community offered views of the nearby arboretum. We felt as though we were in a peaceful, secluded area despite being right in the middle of Boston, which we love.”

Throughout their lives, the couple spent years traveling the globe, collecting unique works of art from every country they visited. Moving to Springhouse hasn't just honored those past experiences; it has reignited old creative passions while introducing exciting new ones.

Jerry, who possessed a deep love for creating art in his youth, found himself reunited with a canvas and brush in the dedicated Springhouse art studio. His creative rebirth sits alongside an active engagement in community lectures and lively discussion groups, particularly those diving into American history and classical music.

“I had to set art aside for my career in physics, but here, I’ve reconnected with it,” Jerry explains.

His academic career was certainly no minor detour. During his tenure at MIT, Jerry contributed to groundbreaking physics research that ultimately earned him a Nobel Prize. Today, he eagerly shares that wealth of scientific insight during lifelong learning sessions with fellow Springhouse residents.

Meanwhile, Tania has also embraced an active role within the community, having served as president of the Independent Living Association. She also delights in regular visits from their two daughters who live nearby.

Both Jerry and Tania take full advantage of Springhouse’s weekly Great Courses, exploring subjects ranging from quantum mechanics to art history. Tania is especially fond of a series focused on the Louvre, which rekindled her passion for classical art. With live performances by visiting musicians and planned group outings to Boston's legendary museums, their days are filled with intellectual spark.

“It’s an engaging environment filled with individuals from diverse fields and backgrounds,” says Tania. “The sense of community here, with everyone sharing their interests, is inspiring.”
