Sun Tower residents, team members and special guests celebrated the grand re-opening of the newly renovated affordable housing community in Yakima, Washington.

The twelve-story high rise apartment building, a HumanGood owned and managed community originally built in 1967, underwent an extensive renovation totaling $21.4 million. The renovations included upgrading the central air system, renovating the community’s common areas such as the library, resident lounge and office spaces. Residents also have new windows, appliances, cabinets and flooring.

“We’re happy to have completed the rehabilitation at Sun Tower, which has extended the life of the building and made units and common spaces more comfortable for residents,” said Brian Lloyd, vice president of development at Beacon Development Group. “The work we’ve done preserves the housing as affordable and ensures low-income seniors in Yakima can continue to thrive in their community.”

Beacon Development, a subsidiary of HumanGood, is an affordable housing development firm that works with nonprofits and housing authorities to create high-quality multifamily communities. Funding for the Sun Tower renovation included monies from Enterprise Community Investments, the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, Washington State Housing Trust Fund and a flexible subsidy loan from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Mayor Kathy Coffey joined the celebration as well as representatives from our key partners on the project such as Key Bank and the Yakima Housing Authority. The project development team, architecture firm Environmental Works and Dawson Construction, also shared in the festivities.
