Piedmont Gardens’ skilled nursing center earned a national 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The 5-star rating for a nursing center, the highest possible rating given by CMS, is based on state-conducted health inspections, staffing and quality measures of medical care. CMS ranks nursing centers nationwide with the intent to help families and caregivers to compare nursing homes and make the best choice when deciding on care for a loved one.

Skilled nursing care at Piedmont Gardens received the highest rating in the top four major areas of focus for CMS. In addition, our skilled nursing center earned a 5-star rating for staffing of registered nurses, which is displayed separately on the Nursing Home Compare website. Our skilled nursing center is the only one in the East Bay area to receive the highest possible rating given across all categories.

“It’s a matter paying attention to all the details, having a stable leadership team, and focusing on person-directed care,” said Daniel Wittman, health services administrator at the Oakland, California-based community. “I’m really grateful that our team has brought this all together.”

Skilled nursing provides the highest level of care available outside of a hospital, ranging from providing short-term care for those recovering from major surgeries to those in need of 24-hour long-term care.

CMS ratings range from a low one-star (quality below average) to the highest 5-star rating (above average quality).  To learn more about CMS and the nursing home compare program, visit Medicare.gov.

The 5-star rating comes as Piedmont Gardens was recently named the best in senior living for 2018 in Oakland Magazine’s Readers’ Choice awards. Next year, the Oakland community will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
