About Cupboards of Care
Enriching the Experiences of Our Residents
Helping Reduce Food Insecurity Across Affordable Housing Communities
Cupboards of Care was launched in 2016 to address the dilemma of food insecurity among low-income older adults in our Affordable Housing Communities.
With the generosity of charitable partners, including individuals, corporations and foundations, we provide direct financial assistance in the form of debit cards for the purchase of healthy food items, such as fresh produce and lean meats.
Cupboards of Care serves communities in:
- California
- Delaware
- Oregon

Cupboards of Care reduces hunger among residents and promotes healthy eating habits.
Residents receive a reward card each quarter to purchase healthy foods. They also receive counseling and education from a certified nutrionist.
Residents return their receipts for review/recording and are counseled as needed.
Outcomes include increased levels of food security, improved healthy eating habits and a variety of health benefits.
Impact
Annual questionnaire shows a majority (63%) of participants report low food security.
Review of receipts ensures improvement in quality of items purchased, including more fruits and vegetables and less high-fat, high-sugar and low-quality foods.
Residents report secondary outcomes, including improved health, weight loss, stabilized finances and a greater sense of how to eat healthy on a limited budget.
The Need Is Growing
Health consequences, including cognitive decline and chronic disease, underscore the urgency of addressing senior hunger.
Funding threats pose systemic barriers to achieving food security among seniors.
