Since he was a kid, Les Beccue has loved the game of baseball, and his passion for competition and camaraderie has burned brightly throughout his life.

Now at age 81–or 21 with 60 years of experience, as he prefers to define it–Les is one of the longest-serving members of the North County Senior Softball League with nearly 20 years as a pitcher.

The league is open to players of all abilities, ages 55 and up, garnering a roster of roughly 150 players a season. Twice a week, Les hits the mound to pitch though he admits that his game isn’t quite where it used to be when he played for Concordia Teachers College (now Concordia University in Chicago).

“We’re here to have fun,” Les said in the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s not about the competition, it’s about the camaraderie.”
