Ed and Katie Bonsey:  a Chemistry That Has Lasted a Lifetime

Bosney GLG.jpgEd and Katie Bonsey never thought a college chemistry class would be the beginning of something special.

But 63 years later, they’re living happily together at Grand Lake Gardens.

Before moving to the Oakland community in 2005, the couple raised their four children in Hawaii, where Ed served as a priest in the Episcopal Church and Katie worked as a secretary.

“I thought we might miss Hawaii more,” Katie says.

Over the years, the Bonseys often vacationed in the Bay Area. And for the last decade, their love has grown stronger while they experience Grand Lake Gardens — and a new chapter of their life — together.

“We enjoy listening to everybody’s stories,” Katie says of her neighbors. “The variety is very interesting.”

The couple continues to write their own story by engaging with those diverse neighbors. They serve on the Health, Wellness and Safety Committee, attend classical music performances, and go to church every Sunday with some fellow Episcopalian friends from the community. Ed also played an instrumental role in launching Grand Lake Gardens’ Foundation committee, which serves the community and its residents in a variety of ways.

“It’s people who keep you interested in life,” Katie says.

But no matter how many new friends they meet, the Bonseys will always share a long, devoted friendship between them.

“I’ve been most grateful for the loving dedication,” says Ed. “Katie has been a wonderful wife.”
